12 Monkeys (1995) 

In the year 2035 The Army of  The 12 Monkeys have made the surface of the planet uninhabitable by releasing a killer virus that wipes out most human life.  Bruce Willis is Cole, a prisoner who is "volunteered" for surface recon to determine why some forms of life have survived and is then sent into the past to determine the cause of the plague.  

This is one of my favorite movies.  Bruce Willis is excellent in the non-heroic hero role.  Brad Pitt is great as an over the top mental patient.  And Madeline Stowe is serviceable as the psychologist.  I don't really like her for some reason, but the movie far outshines her presence. 

Even though it's a really weird film, it's still Terry Gilliam's most mainstream movie.  But don't let that stop you from loving it!  The scenes of the new under-ground civilization are especially bizarre, and reminiscent of the Belgian film The City of Lost Children, by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet.  12 Monkeys is based on the short film by Chris Marker called La Jetée.
